She recently designed a line of hand-carved marble mantels for Chesney’s, the British fireplace company. So while Ms. Hampton doesn’t actually use her fireplaces (fire and children, she said, “is a lethal combination, to be avoided at all costs”), that doesn’t mean she ignores them. “The fireplace shelves are our modern-day altars,” she said. “We dress them up.” Ms. Hampton is a regular at William H. Jackson’s storefront showroom in the Flatiron district. The company has made fireplace accessories since 1827. (She owns the No. 6311 Spark Arrestor fire screen in black.) “This is my preferred style of fire screen,” she said on a recent visit. “It disappears and allows the mantel to take center stage.” At Newel, on East 53rd Street, she picked out an antique coal scuttle because “as much as I love all things practical, I also love quirkiness,” she said. “If everything in a fireplace is fairly standard, a dog-and-opaline-handled coal scuttle makes for a great moment of uniqueness.” She also liked a sheepskin rug from Ikea for its kitsch factor. “As a child of the ’70s and ’80s, nothing appeals to my James Bond-loving heart more than this little silliness,” she said. But one of her favorite items, for decorative and practical reasons, was an antique padded fender bench she found at Ann Morris antiques. It would be a “nice place to plant down with a hot toddy,” she said. But as a mother of three, she couldn’t help noticing that it would also serve as “a great bulwark, as in, ‘Stop!
